  • Easy Metal Stamped Penny Necklace

easy metal stamped penny necklace margot potter

Stamping on a curved surface is a great way to practice and master metal stamping. Stamping straight lines is challenging for beginners, but by marking and stamping around a curve, you can begin to get a feel for what it takes to make deep, crisp, even impressions. Here’s a simple, layered Metal Stamped Penny Necklace that features stamping letters on a curve and adding textures to metal blanks. Turn your lucky penny into a pretty keepsake, or make one for a friend featuring their birth year or a special date!

You will need (Disclosure: Links below are affiliate links, if you click on a link and make a purchase, we get a small percentage of the sale. That’s how we keep the lights on, folks.)

    Penny
ImpressArt, 8 Petal Flower, Copper, 15/16″ Stamping Blank
ImpressArt, Heart, Brass, 1 1/2″ Stamping Blanks- 24 pc.
Beadalon Chain Figaro Medium Gold Plated
Beadalon Jump Ring 6mm Nickel Free Gold Plated
Folk Art 4032 Enamel 2-Ounce Acrylic Paint, Licorice
ImpressArt Basic Metal Stamp Set, Uppercase, San Serif, 3mm
ImpressArt 2 by 2-Inch Steel Block, Small
Metal Hole Punch Pliers for Sheet Metal, 1.5mm
    ImpressArt Face Chasing Hammer
    ImpressArt Brass Stamping Hammer
ImpressArt Texture Hammer, Cross Hatch/Rectangular Stars
2 Pairs Chain Nose Pliers W/White Sparkle Handles-
    Non-permanent marker
    Cotton swab
    Soft cloth or paper towel

    1-4 Lucky

Step one: Use a non-permanent marker to mark even placement of letters. Step two: Stamp the center letter. Step three: the bench block so the area you plan to stamp is facing you and stamp above your marks as shown to spell the word LUCKY. Be sure to hold the stamp straight, it needs to be in full contact with the blank to make an even impression. If you hold it straight and hit it firmly dead center, you should get a good impression. If you flinch while stamping, don’t lift your hand or move the stamp and you can hit it again. Step four: Use the round end of a chasing hammer to add texture to the flower blank as shown.

    5-8 Lucky

Step five: Strike surface of heart blank with texture hammer making a criss-cross pattern. Step six: Mark and pierce one of the petals of your flower blank. Step seven: Mark and pierce top center of penny. Step eight: Mark and pierce top left corner of heart as shown.

    9-12 Lucky

Step nine: Use a cotton swab or your finger tip and apply an even coat of acrylic enamel paint to surface of heart, dig the paint into the stamped areas. Wipe clean with a soft cloth. Step ten: Repeat the process with your stamped penny. Step eleven: Slide a jump ring through all three blanks, the penny is on top, then the flower, then the heart. Step twelve: Attach the jump ring to the chain, secure closed with tension using two pairs of chain nose pliers.

That’s it! If you don’t want to have the layers, just stamp the penny and attach it to a chain, key chain, earring wire, bracelet, or stamp a penny and give it as a keepsake without the pierced hole. Make an Easy Metal Stamped Penny Necklace of your own in just a few simple steps and in the process, master the basics of metal stamping.

  • DIY Flower Earrings

    DIY Flower Earrings

I love these flower shaped base metal stamping blanks, they’re so much fun to use in layers. These DIY Flower Earrings would be perfect with our Shine necklace, or on their own. Easy and fun to make out of copper blanks with just a single design stamp in a repeated pattern to add texture. Hammer, stamp, ink and layer and if you like you can make your own head pins and ear hooks using 20 gauge wire.

    What you need:

2 ImpressArt, 8 Petal Flower, Copper, 15/16″ Stamping Blanks- 24 pc.

    Amazon.com Widgets

    1-3

Step one: Hammer the heart stamp into the center of the smaller flower blank repeatedly, this is to create texture. Use round end of chasing hammer to hammer flower. Step two: Use round end of chasing hammer to hammer larger flower blank. Step three: Use dapping tool to dap smaller flower into a curved shape.

    4-6

Step four: Use hole punch to pierce holes in top center petal of both blanks. I use chain nose pliers to pull one of the petals on the smaller flower back a little so it hangs nicely. (If you want the stamped areas on the center of the blank to be more defined, use a cotton swab to wipe some acrylic enamel paint on the blank. Let set for 30 seconds and use a soft cloth or paper towel to wipe away the excess.) Step five: Cut a 1″ segment of wire. Bend and loop the ends using round nose pliers. Step six: Hammer the loop flat with the flat side of your chasing hammer.

    7-9

Step seven: Slide bead on wire. Bend wire flush to top of bead at a 90 degree angle. Cut wire to 1/4″. Grasp end of wire and bend into a loop. Step eight: Your ear wire loop needs to be bent perpendicular so the earring will hang to the front when attached. Use your chain nose pliers to gently bend the loop. If it opens up, be sure to secure it closed. Your round nose pliers can help with that. Step nine: Assemble the layers large to small attaching them to the jump ring and the ear wire as shown.

    Hearts and Flowers One

    Hearts and Flowers

That’s it! Fun, fast and fabulous. You can make these in mixed metals, add larger beads, use colored paint and make this project your own. Adding texture to your metal really gives it an artisan appeal and it is so easy to do. With winter looming, these pretty DIY Flower Earrings give you just a touch of spring even on the coldest days.

  • Artist Spotlight: Barbe Saint John

    Artist Spotlight Barbe SaintJohn

Meet metal smith and jewelry artist Barbe Saint John! Barbe has recently launched a new line of mid-century modern inspired jewelry that is exceptional in design and artistry. Her former line, Saints and Sinners was on the cutting edge of the mixed media/assemblage jewelry trend. We’ve been fans of her work for years and we were tickled pink when she agreed to answer our Five Easy Questions! Here are here insightful replies!

When did you start making jewelry and why?

I got started being creative at an early age-I was making very simple Barbie dresses with my Mom when I was 4, and my Grandmother taught me to crochet when I was 5. My Grandmother was very into fashion and jewelry. It was her love of adornment that got me interested. She would give me her broken bead necklaces to string my own, and brought me a bead loom back from Arizona when I was about 8 yrs old. I’ve been making jewelry ever since.

What is your favorite source for jewelry making inspiration?

I have a great deal of diverse interests and hobbies so those are often my main inspirations. I currently have two lines of work. With my mixed media jewelry and art; my core inspirations are vintage fashions, science, archeology, Egyptology, and all things paranormal, weird or a bit mad. On the other hand, my modern jewelry line is inspired by mid-century art, artists and pop culture.

What advice do you have for folks just starting out?

First and foremost-buy the best tools you can afford. You don’t have to immediately invest in jeweler quality tools, but having good quality/mid-price range tools will save you frustration. Also, they will last you for years and you can slowly upgrade them to better tools over time. Also, practice and play with your materials often! Students and beginners get upset they didn’t make a “perfect” piece on their first try. It’s by practicing and playing, that you learn the skills and dexterity needed for jewelry making and you also will start to hone your own style/voice that way too.

What tips or tricks can you share for successful metal stamping?

The Stamp Straight Tape""” target=”_blank” rel=”nofollow”>Stamp Straight Tape has been a godsend for me!! I use to use multiple layers of duct tape, but that’s time consuming and leaves gummy residue on your block. Stamp Straight tape is thick enough you can “feel” it when you position your stamp and you don’t have to layer it. It’s sticky enough to hold but doesn’t leave a gummy residue on your block or blank. Also-practice makes perfect! Save your blanks and get a small sheet of 22g copper from a hobby or craft store. Lay down a few strips of Stamp Straight Tape and start hammering. You’ll quickly learn how to feel for the tape with your stamp, what the best distance between letters is, etc.

Where can our readers find you?

You can find me online at my website, blog, Etsy, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and Modern Metal’s Pinterest.

Take a moment to visit Barbe Saint John and show her a little love. I guarantee you are going to be impressed with her work!  Tune in Monday for a new DIY metal stamping tutorial!

    Happy Stamping,
    Margot and Avalon

Beadalon 19-Strand Bead Stringing Wire, 0.018
Beadalon Toggle Clasps Small Silver Plated
    2 Tube Crimp, Silver -2x2mm
3 Beadalon Jump Rings 6mm Silver Plated
Beadalon 10mm Jump Ring Silver Plated
German Style Wire, Round, Silver Plated, 24 gauge

ImpressArt Newsprint Lowercase Alphabet Metal Stamps
ImpressArt 2 by 2-Inch Steel Block
    ImpressArt Stamp Straight Tape
    Ergo-Angle Metal Stamping Hammer
    Pattiewack Designs Mini Tassel Maker
    ImpressArt Chain Nose Pliers
    ImpressArt Bent Nose Pliers
    ImpressArt Flush Cutters
    Beadalon Beading Scissors

    Tassell Bracelet 1-4

One: Tape blank to bench block. Stamp ‘bliss’, alternating placement of letters. Design tip: Start with the ‘i’ in the center and work to both sides. Two: Wipe multi-surface paint on blank. Wipe paint from surface. Three: Place beads on board in a pattern, build beads up to numbers on side to fit your wrist. Add the two numbers together to get the finished length in inches. Our bracelet is 7″ including the clasp. Four: Thread wire into crimp bead. Thread wire back through clasp end and back into crimp tube. Hold wires uncrossed to crimp. Check out this video to learn how to crimp correctly!

    Tassell Bracelet 5-8

Five: Finish bracelet with crimp bead attached to jump ring. Design tip: Make sure bracelet is rounded to allow a little space between your beads, this keeps the bracelet from being too stiff when worn. Six: Attach finished bracelet to bar side of toggle clasp with a second jump ring. This makes it easy for the bar to fit into the circle element of the clasp. Seven: Get your yarn and mini-tassell tool ready! Eight: Wrap the yarn around the second notch on the tassel tool as in photo.

    Tassell Bracelet 9-12

Nine: Follow instructions for tassel tool.  Instead of using yarn to tie off the top and bottom, we’re using a large jump ring and wire. Thread jump ring into top of tassel. Wrap wire tightly several times around center of tassel.  Cut bottom of tassel with scissors into fringe. Side tassel from tool. Use scissors to even tassel ends. Ten: Finish wrapping tassel tightly with wire, cut off excess. Tuck ends into tassel with chain nose pliers. Eleven: Attach tassel and tool to circle side of toggle using a smaller jump ring as in picture. Twelve: Make more!

    Atlas Steps

Step one: Tape your blank to your bench block. Slide stamps down to top of tape, start in center and stamp to edges. The letter ‘m’ should be in the center because you’re adding a period. Use an awl or punctuation stamp to add the period. Step two: Dab paint into letters. Let paint set for 30-40 seconds. Wipe off excess on surface. Step three: Punch or cut the atlas circle to fit pendant. Fold red card stock and use small scissors to hand cut tiny heart. Step four: Use a toothpick to apply a small dab of paper glue to back of heart. Press heart on to the area of atlas you want to highlight. Allow to dry. Step five: Add a thin layer of decoupage medium to back of pendant and front of atlas paper. Press together, gently pressing out any bubbles with fingertips. Allow to dry, paint a second coat of decoupage medium. Allow this to dry overnight. Step six: Use chain nose pliers to connect stamped pendant to acrylic pendant. Attach to your ball chain.

  • Introducing SoftStrike Stamping Blanks

    alkeme

New Product Alert!  Big news for metal stampers! ImpressArt recently debuted a new metal alloy called Alkemé along with their fabulous cast pewter and aluminum SoftStrike stamping blanks at the CHA Show and the Tucson Gem Show.  People were freaking out, as well they should be, because this is a big deal.  Up until now, the affordable options for metal stamping  fell under the base metal category.  Base metal can be difficult to stamp consistently.  People become easily frustrated when they don’t have consistently great results.  If people are frustrated, it’s unlikely they’ll continue doing something.  Plus, making a mistake on a sterling silver blank is an expensive proposition.  The focus at ImpressArt is coming up with tools and materials that help make it easier for the novice and the metal stamping enthusiast to have consistently great results.

The pendant above is a simple stamped Alkemé washer.  I polished it with jeweler’s rouge and a flexible shaft tool.  Alkemé doesn’t tarnish, polishes to a mirror finish shine, is very affordable and stamps like buttah!  The pewter blanks have a more antique, brushed metal appearance.  They’re soft and easy to stamp, you get really deep impressions with a single tap of the hammer.  I love them both for different reasons.  If you’re just starting out, I recommend aluminum, the most affordable option.  It’s perfect for practice and can be hammered, dapped and formed with ease, plus it comes in over 100 different shapes!

Look for the new ImpressArt SoftStrike stamping blanks online and in retail stores!

    Cheers,
    Madge
